<image:caption>Carlson’s is a family-run northwoods retreat on Leech Lake between the towns of Longville and Walker. We’ve been hosting generations of summertime vacationers since the 1930s, offering comfortable cabin rentals, a small beachfront and harbor, and some of the best fishing in the state. <image:title>About Us</image:title>
<image:caption>Carlson Cabins is a small, family-run property on the southeastern shore of Leech Lake. We rent out four cabins in a tranquil setting ideal for family gatherings, fishing trips and summertime R&R. Guests tell us they come for the fishing, the sand-bottom swimming area, outings to nearby Walker and Longville, and the wildlife, sunsets, and northwoods magic of one of Minnesota’s largest lakes. It’s a great place to kick back and enjoy the lake-country summer. Staying at Carlson’s is like staying at a friend's cabin. We don't maintain full-time staff, but do keep the cabins and the grounds in tip-top shape, and someone’s always in reach to answer questions. With only four cabins, it’s a great place to come with friends and family and take over the whole place. More than half of our rentals come from groups, many of whom have been returning each summer for decades.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Us - History</image:title>
<image:caption>Carlson’s began life in the 1930s as the barebones fishing resort of August and Mettie Carlson. August, from Sweden, and Mettie, from North Dakota, hosted families and fishermen from across the Midwest, renting out two cabins (today’s #1 and #2) and fishing boats with 10-horse motors. August ran a store at the top of the hill and acted as a fishing guide, taking guests to troll for Northern Pike and Muskie in Headquarter’s Bay and the waters around Bear Island. Mettie was postmaster of the local Brevik post office, which was set up by Charles A. Lindbergh, a Minnesota congressman and father to the famous aviator of the same name. The annual visitors included the Van Werdens, an Iowa family that fell in love with the resort during their summertime fishing trips in the 1950s. When the Carlsons retired in the 1970s, the grown Van Werden children and their Otto in-laws joined together to buy the resort, and they’ve been running it ever since. Their families have grown considerably since then, with children and grandchildren and new in-laws spread across the country and around the world, but Carlson’s is still a place they return to each summer. Carlson’s has modernized over the years, and it’s moved on from its former full-service resort days, but it still retains much of the charm of the lakeside fishing retreat it was in the 1930s. We added hot water, showers, and kitchen sinks in the 1980s, and in 1985 we shut the door on the old outhouses for the last time. Cabin 1 was rebuilt in 1995, followed by brand new Beach Cabin in 2010. In 2012 we dug a new deep well and added a water system, bidding a fond farewell to the little red pump that served us without fail for more than 50 years. In 2019, the property’s largest and most comfortable cabin made its debut, replacing August and Mettie’s original cabin that had stood for nearly 100 years.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Cabin 1 stands at the middle of the Carlson property, and after it was rebuilt in the early 1990s it served as the main gathering place, with an expansive dining area and sitting room overlooking the lake. Cabin 1 comfortably sleeps 4-6 people in two bedrooms plus a futon that can be curtained off from the living room. It features a bathroom with shower, a bright kitchen, high ceiling, stone fireplace, and a commons area that serves as both living room and dining area. <image:title>Cabin 4: The New Cabin - For extra comfort on the lake</image:title>
<image:caption>We built the New Cabin in 2018-2019 on the site of the Carlson founder’s original cabin, ending that dwelling’s run of nearly a century. What emerged is our biggest and most comfortable cabin, featuring log construction and all the amenities of home, including the first and only dishwasher on the property. The New Cabin’s main floor comprises a master bedroom with private bathroom and tub, a second bedroom with two single beds, a common bathroom with shower, an open kitchen with granite countertops and space for multiple cooks, a living room with gas fireplace, and a sun porch. Upstairs is a third bedroom with queen bed, two loft areas, and small, lake-facing balcony that’s become a favorite place for coffee and sunsets alike. Other amenities include a BBQ grill on a covered deck, a flat-screen TV, and internet wifi. The New Cabin is elderly-friendly, with an entrance ramp, a near-zero-entry shower with grab bars, and a lift chair in the living room. (Kindly note that we maintain a small owner’s apartment in the New Cabin’s walkout basement. It faces the parking lot behind the cabin, with no shared access points with the rental cabin.).</image:caption>

<image:title>Cabin 2 - The fisherman’s classic</image:title>
<image:caption>Cabin 2 was built in 1948 and retains the rustic charm of a fishing cabin from yesteryear. It was designed by Mettie Carlson, who sketched out dimensions and layout on a piece of paper the night before construction began. Except for the addition of a bathroom and plumbing, the cabin remains largely as Mettie envisioned it more than 70 years ago. Cabin 2 is our smallest cabin, sleeping up to four people in two bedrooms that are separated from the main room by curtains. The kitchen is compact but fully equipped for northwoods cooking, and the single bathroom has a shower. A main room comprises a dining table and sitting area, and features the cabin’s original hardwood floors and fireplace made of lake stones. It includes a flat-screen TV, internet wifi, and an outdoor grill.</image:caption>

<image:title>Cabin 3: The Beach Cabin - On the lake, at the lake</image:title>
<image:caption>The Beach Cabin started life in the 1950s as a boathouse for wintertime storage. In the 1970s it was reconfigured as a lakeside cabin, becoming a favorite among children who spent summer vacations swimming in the white caps of Leech and drying out in front of the Beach’s fireplace. In 2010, we rebuilt it entirely into the small but comfortable cabin it is today. The Beach sleeps four people in two bedrooms, one featuring a queen bed and the other a bunkbed consisting of a double and a single. There’s one bathroom with shower, and a commons area comprising a kitchen, dining table, and sitting area. The Beach features a gas stove and outdoor grill, and comes with internet wifi and a flat-screen TV.</image:caption>
